Saab: FUEL SYSTEM PROB 89 900 TURBO, crankshaft position sensor, damper pulley

Question
Hello,

I am working on my dads 89 Saab turbo 900se it does not start.  I have tested several things and admit I am stumped.    Yes it cranks, has spark although seems week at the plugs (bosh platinum) not at the wire.  Fuel pump has no power during cranking but I jumped the relay (pumps runs good) pumping up the pressure in the fuel rail but still no start.  Plugs dry no gas smell from calendar when plugs removed.  It is as if it has a failure that is preventing the injectors from firing as well as not turning on the fuel pump relay.

Do you have suggestions, other sensor tests etc?

Answer
Jim:
I suspect you have a problem with the injector drive circuit. It could be either the input to the computer from the crankshaft position sensor,9found on the rear of the engine next to the damper pulley),  the fuel injector relay (found in the fuse box), or the control computer itself. There are extensive trouble location procedures to pinpoint the exact problem.   I would start with the fuel injector relay as being the simplest possible faulty component.
If you are so inclined, I would suggest subscribing to <www.alldatadiy.com> as it offers the most comprehensive info on trougleshooting (any car) that I know of. It costs $25/vehicle/year, but is well worth it.
