Saab: last 1 93 Saab 900 clucth slave, hex bolt, release bearings

Question
QUESTION: WLasr question.

as I fugured out with you help, how to do this, I hit a snagged.  Whoever replace the salve before me, stripped one of the 3 bolts ( hex)  that hld the slave in. first 2 came out no problem, number 3 was srtipped when put in, or he put a stripped one in somehow.

so, I have 1 hex in the 1 o'clock poistion to getout, and I would have this project finished.

I cannot grab it with vice grips, as their is little room.   Someone suggested drilling the head offf, but that would leave me nothinhg to get it out the rest of the way. I am afraid of damaging the housing.

any idea on how to get this (hex)  bolt.  I am sorry to be a pain, but I cant find anyone who has an answer for this.

If I can get this out, I would FINALLY be done with this project.... I hope.

ANSWER: Donny:
I suggest "sawing" the head off with a hacksaw. Then you can remove the slave cylinder, leaving the threaded "stub" [equal to the thickness of the slave cylinder base]in the transmission housing. Using a vice grip could easily extract it then.
Don't be bashful about additional questions if required...I'll help as much as I can!

QUESTION: Hey Jerry,

Good news. got the bold out and only broke 3 fingers getting the slave and plate, pa etc etc  LOL.  There pressure plate was Impossible to get anything in there, so I really have to tug and such.

Now that I have it apart, I am going to go ahead and replace the plate, pad, and any seals. Luckily, I did find a plate special tool ( a little late but I am buying one)  so a couple of final questions.

The seal, in the  husing wher the shaftt goes thu has some nicks and such , so being they are inexpensive, I am going to go ahead and replace it.I am not sure what that is called.  is it the  pilot and release bearings?  are herre any other small things like that I need?    I ound a kit online that has a clutch kit, which has the pressure plate, disc, alignment tool , pilot and release bearngs. I already have the slave and new hose.

There was a metal thing against the pressure plate facing outward to the slave. Is that the bearing?  The manual is not very clear on what alot of this stuff is called.     The flywheel looks excellent, no burns, scratches,  rust anything, so I am going to let that be.

I have to order this from online, so I am just trying to make sure I dont forget anything.    Of, the road throught the house looks good, not flat spots, scratches, anything, so we are goo there I think.

anyhing you can think of I need, please let me know.   I am about done with this.  I can tell you, it will sure be a heack of alot easier getting it back in than out.   Having the special tool ring Is everything.    I couldnt even get enough space to get anything in there and had to fight it out.  NO FUN. , so if you own a saab, buy one of these for 25.00.  will  shave hours off this project for sure.

so Like I said, anything you think I need , seals, etc etc, please let me know.   Oh, there is no ring seal on the new slave, but there was one on the old one. I saw a pack of 4 as a seal kit.  4.00 so I am buying them too.  Like I said, the manual is not really clear on alot of suff.

I realy appeciate you time.   Thank you.

Donny

Answer
Donny:
Looks like you are making progress; kol ha kavod.
 First:
Yes, it is wise to replace the rubber seal; it is called
 "a clutch shaft seal";

 Second:
The pilot bearing is a ball bearing in the middle of the flywheel, into which the clutch shaft end goes. It should be checked for smooth movement; if movement is not smooth, it should be replaced; It is inexpensive. To do this, you will need to unbolt the flywheel.

Third:
The metal piece against the pressure is the "throwout bearing"; when the clutch pedal is depressed, the slave cylinder expands outward against this bearing and against the clutch fingers, thus releasing the clutch.

Fourth:
When everything is assembled, you will need to "bleed" the hydraulic system of air. To do this, you will need to pressurize the (brake) master cylinder to force brake fluid all the way through the clutch master and then on to the slave. This can be difficult and tricky...good luck.
