Saab: 1987 saab 900, triangular nuts, torx screws

Question
how do you remove the ignition switch so i can put a new key and switch in?

Answer
To get at the key-switch you will need to remove the plastic console cover between the front seats. This is held in place by several Phillips or torx screws which first must be removed. Gently lift and maneuver the cover off, allowing the shift lever to slide through. Now remove the 5 or 6 wires and make a sketch of their destinations on the keyswitch. Remove the 3 screws holding the ring around the shift lever and remove it. Now comes a bit of a challenge..there are 3 "security nuts" holding the cast aluminum switch/shiftlever housing. I have built a special removal tool by taking an old socket and filing away 3 side sections so that it fits the triangular nuts. Sometimes a narrow punch hit sideways will loosen them. (They can easily be replaced with conventional nuts upon reassembly). Once removed, the housing must be lifted and turned 90 deg exposing the bottom. (Removal of the driver's seat may make this easier). Several screws hold the bottom plate on which are generally VERY tight. They must be removed and this allows removal,of the housing entirely, leaving the end of the shift rod in place. Now you can remove the 2 screws holding the key switch and then replace it, reversing the above operations for reassembly.
                   Good Luck!
