Saab: new alternator still have battery light on, jumper cables, inductive type

Question
we have changed the alternator and the belts on my 93 saab 900, and the battery light is still on and seems that it is not charging while driving, the car will just stop after 5 minutes or so, can this be anything other than we need new battery?

Answer
T. Adams,
Yes, it is possible that you need a new battery. I would first check the voltage and current output of the alternator. Unless you have a fancy inductive type ammeter, most volt meters won't allow you to measure beyond 10 amps - your alternater should put out 55 or more at max load. I would take your car to your local parts store and ask them to check your alternator. They should be able to check it in or out of the car.
Regarding your battery, the nominal voltage should be aprox 13.5 +/-1 volt.
You could also see if your car runs greater than 5min with jumper cables applied. This could help to see if the battery is bad as well.
