Toyota: 1997 Toyota Camry malfunctioning anti-theft device, toyota camry, toyota dealership

Question
Dave,

As far as I can tell, the alarm system was added by the Toyota Dealership.  I can't find a manufacturer's name on it, but by doing an internet search on the part numbers, it matches exactly to the "Dealer Service and Installation Manual Kit No. 00016-30915" that I found at http://www.toyotaparts4u.com/pdf_files/0001630915Highlander%20Security%20System..

I printed off the Installation Manual, but I'm still not sure how to disarm & disable everything.  Your thoughts?

David,

I am the husband to Roxanne Farkas (who started this Q&A session about our car.  She asked me to take over & work with you to solve this.

I am at work, so I don't have the make & model info on the alarm.  The Toyota manuel describes an anti-theft device so it may be original, HOWEVER, as I have looked at the wiring, it looks like it was added aftermarket.  Also, there is a quick-reference card mentioning a keychain fob, but I don't have it (car was purchased used).

Does that help?

No, I'm not trying to steal my own car.  But something is seriously wrong with our anti-theft device.  Yesterday I went to start the car and the car wouldn't start and there were lights flashing various places on the dash then the alarm goes off.  So I get out the book and figure out how to shut the thing off.  No I've never had it go off before.  It is a used vehicle and I didn't even know the device was intact.  When I go through the procedure of unlocking the car door, put key in and turn to "On" and then press the small red button, the alarm stops but the engine still won't start.  Anytime I try anything on the car the alarm now goes off.  So I disconnected the battery just to give peace to our neighborhood for the day.

My husband has read everything in the owners manual without success of getting the starter to engage again. You are our last hope before having to take it in and pay to have this problem fixed.

I really want to help so let's start tackling this.  Is this a Toyota anti-theft device?  Do you happen to have the model number for it?  To turn the anti-theft system on or off, you use a little keychain fob?  Write back as soon as you can!  Let's get to the bottom of this.

Dave, that really sucks that you got a sold a car like that.  If there is anyway you can get me the make and model, I could try to find a manual for it to see if we can override.  But, you are left with two choices. A universal keychain fob can be purchased via EBay or any good auto parts store.  But, you'd need the manual to program it.  The only other choice is to destroy:)  LOL!  See if you can sever the brain from the car's system.

My '99 has Toyota's VIP (Vehicle Intrusion Protection) system in it.  To sever the brain's connection there, it's only a matter of slicing the wires that lead from the car to the brain under my driver's seat.

I would sever the thing UNLESS you can get the model and make BUT I would sever the connection so I could atleast USE it later in time should I want, or sell the brain as a replacement part, or just use it to add a little extra value to the car should I want to sell it (but, with no remote, I don't exactly see how'd that work:))

Like I said though, if you can get me the model number and make, we could find the manual and ACTUALLY get some use out of that thing.  But, you need the car, so.. slicing the connection is probably the next best alternative.

Tell me what you think and get back to me as soon as you can as I want to really help you.

P.S.  When you bought it, was there any mention made of the alarm.  As well, the brain SHOULD have a connection that you can just unhook to render it useless.  No cutting should be needed but if that system just has wiring coming out of the Brain, then you can either follow the line to see if you can find where a connection is at or just slice it leaving as much line from the brain as you can so if it can be used later on, it's only a matter of using a soldering iron to redo the connection.

Answer
Page 7 shows exactly what I feel was the best way to kill this alarm.  We have to find the "main control module" which I'm sure is what you probably looked at to get the part number to find this kit.  Pulling off that one connector that leads to the module will solve all the problems.

But, with that said, assuming it's a Toyota system, you want to try to make it work?  I'd like it if we could get it to work for you.  Let me know what you want to do but right now, find that control module and unplug it.  Where did you find this part number?  I'm sure it was probably inside the car, right?  So, sever the connection Dave and your problems are solved:-)

But, as you can see in the book, the "MCM" in this car, is located on the ABS unit under the hood.  Just use that picture to find a black box with a big white connector to it.

let me know if you need anything else.
