Toyota: Engine making noises and car shaking, 1989 toyota camry, frequent oil changes

Question
All of a sudden my 1989 Toyota Camry began running loud shaking requiring gunning the accelerator to get it going and sputtering and knocking  as it runs. When it goes over 20 the sputtering subsides a little. Any ideas on what is going on . The car has been well maintained with frequent oil changes but it does have a hole in the muffler and hasnt been had a tune -up It only has 70,000 miles

Answer
Hello,

I don't know which engine is yours, there are many possibilities:
- lambda sond (catalysator problems)
- mafs (mass air fuel sensor, if it has one)
- something involved with head gasket and valves

Try have this checked by a professional toyota dealer.

Hope this helps!

Jack
