Volkswagen: my generator / alternater is not charging, alternater, hard time

well first of all..... im not sure if I have alternater or generator. when I bought the1969 bug, it didn't have a regulator, I figured that was the reason it wasn't charging. It wasn't, so Im having  a hard time figuring if the wires are right ......my generator / alternater has some kind of box w/h 2 connection and 2 more on the actual part ..... PLEASE HELP me determine weather I have a generator or alternater ....... one more thing if the light for the generator / alternater  is on...... does mean its working?
