Volkswagen: 1971 VW Beetle, negative cable, vw beetle

I just got a new battery for my bug and as I go to put it back in I can see a grounding wire from the positive cable but not the negative cable. I do see a wire hanging free that is hooked to the heater vent and I am wondering if that is supposed to be attached to the negative cable as there is a clamp there. I have a book but it does not talk about grounding other that showing a negative ground in a diagram.

Hi Kerry,

The negative battery connection is typically grounded to the body of the car.  The clamp fitting with the other end attached near the heater vent sounds like the ground.

I would need a picture to be 100% sure, however.
