Volkswagen: 76 vw bus starting problem, dual carb, vw bus

Question
Hi there I just bought a 76 bus that has the 72 dual carb pancake engine and it won't start it push starts but when i turn it over it grinds a little but hardly ever starts i was wondering how often the flywheel goes out on them or maybe just starter also do you have an idea where i can get pics of the heating hoses for heating it all of them have been ripped out and was wondering what it originally looked like thanks

Answer
Hi Stetson,

Typically, the flywheel is a harder alloy steel and does not grind out.  The gear on the starter is usually the first to go.

The best thing to do is drop the starter and than look in the hole where it seated at the teeth of the flywheel.

If you want to check out pictures of the heating configuration, here are some good sources:

Best of luck.
