Volkswagen: Engine is slow turning over, slow starting

Question
i have a '72 bug and i have put a new starter on, replaced the battery and all the battery cables, have checked all my connections, and it will not turn over fast enough to crank the engine. I took a spark plug out then turned it over thinking it might be the compression but still the same outcome. What could be the problem?

Answer
Eric,

Most likely, the problem is the wiring.  Over the years, corrosion builds up in the ground strap and positive lead to the starter (from the battery).

My suggestion would be to go to this site:

Purchase a new positive battery cable and new ground strap.  Make sure that the ground surface is extremely clean and shiny.

This should get you running again with no problem.

Let me know how you make out.
