Volkswagen: Turn signal clicking sound in 03 Passat, vw passat, random intervals

Question
Hi Robert,
I have a 2003 VW Passat 1.8T. Since past week it has started make random clicking sounds while driving even when I don't have the turn signal on. Some say it could be a multi-function switch problem or a faulty turn switch relay or a faulty hazard relay. My hazard lights and turn lights works fine when turned on.
What is the actual problem? Any thoughts?

Regards

Answer
The turn signal relay and the hazard relay are one in the same.  It's located in the hazard switch itself.  Usually when it goes, the turn signals won't work right.

When you hear the click, do any of the lights come on too?  Is it a steady string of clicks like the signals make, or just single clicks at random intervals?  It may be that a different relay is malfunctioning.  Is it related to anything else being on?  Does it happen when you go over bumps?  How frequently does it happen.  If a lot, you could pull out the hazard switch and see if it's still there (avoid busy roads as you'll need to use hand signals!).
