Volkswagen: VW Dune Buggy, vw dune buggy, vacuum servo

Question
Hello Ron,

I just purchased a 1959 VW Dune Buggy. It's manual and I would like to convert it to automatic.  What do I have to do? Can I just change the transmission to an auto-stick?

Answer

AutoStickEngine
Robert,
Sorry for the delay, I was out sick.

There are several things in addition to the transmission:
- The stick shifter itself is unique; it has a microswitch which triggers the vacuum clutch.
- The vacuum servo and linkage, located near the transmission.
- The vacuum holding tank, under left fender.
- The vacuum control valve, located in the engine compartment.
- The ATF tank, located under the right rear fender.  The fluid filler tube protrudes into the engine compartment.
- Special two stage oil pump and hoses.
