Car Stereos: 2001 BUICK LESABRE, dc volts, metal bolt

Question
Brian:

Hi!  I need to know exactly where to hook up the green wire from a PAC SWIJACK steering wheel control interface to a 2001 LeSabre Limited. I know it is under the steering wheel column but exactly which connector, wire, what does it look like, etc?  There are several connectors and a ton of wires! Any help and detail (photos?) would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

Answer
Hi Joe,

Here's a link to a set of instructions for the SWI-Jack, specifically for your car:

This will give you a diagram of the plug, along with the pin location for the remote control wire.  According to the instructions, you're looking for a black 40-pin plug next to the steering column.  If I recall correctly, the plug is on the left side of the steering column assembly; you'll find it lower down the column, not up by the steering wheel.

When I'm installing one of these, I always verify the stock wire function with a multimeter.  To do this, set the meter for DC volts; attach the black probe to a chassis ground point (a metal bolt or bracket under the firewall should do fine) and use the red probe to test the wire.  Turn the key to the "ACC" position.  The correct wire should show a DC voltage that changes whenever you press one of the radio control buttons on the steering wheel.

Hope this helps!

Brian
