Volkswagen: 1995 Volkswagen Jetta GL III Oil Light problem, volkswagen jetta gl, low oil pressure

Question
Hi Rick, We recently (two weeks ago) bought a 1995 Jetta with 130,000 miles. So far we have done a fair amount of city driving and some long highway drives with no problems. Today, the oil pressure light started beeping and flashing at us. We put more oil in the car, but the beeping continued and would stop and start intermittently, but would stop when we revved the engine. Do you think this is an electrical problem, or is there something more serious going on? This happened after driving about 275 miles over the course of the day. One other thing: when we lock the car doors, there is a humming noise from a unit in the rear, which lasts for about 20 seconds. What is this, and should we be worried about it?

Answer
Jade,
Sounds like low oil pressure or the sensor.  I would try getting an oil/filter change with a good synthetic oil first to rule out sludge gunking up the system.  Next easiest would be to replace the oil pressure sensor.  Finally have the oil pump replaced, most expensive option.
