Volkswagen: 1973 vw super beetle Auto stick!, dual port, gears

Question
The car has been sitting since 1989, VERY SOLID GREAT RUNNINNG 1600cc dual port picked up for $400, go to shift into 1st gears grind and wont go into gear, going into any gear gears grind and wont go in, at one point I did get it into to reverse and car moved backwards, and go it to go forward in 1st gear as well. Can you tell me why you think the gears are grinding? Think the clutch ins't engaging? Bad servo? or the pancake cyclinder is dry rotted?
Just as a note the car has a "Park" gear, then "Reverse" and "L" then "1st" and 2nd no 3rd or 4th gear.

Answer
Hi Ryan,
Look under the driver-side rear wheel when car is running. (Careful - don't lay down near the wheel of the car!) While someone attempts to shift it into "1" or "R", see if you see the clutch arm retract back.  Let me know what you find.  If it moves a little or not at all.  Use a light and take some time to do this.

There can be a number of things that are wrong with it.  However, most likely, it is a very inexpensive fix.

Talk to you soon.
