Volkswagen: 1969 VW Transporter Rebuild, vw transporter, fun project

Hi, I'm going to try and completely rebuild an old VW transporter. The whole engine and transmission need to be replaced, and the body needs to be painted, it has slight rust. How much would it cost, and do you have any advice?

Hi Evan,

Sounds like a fun project.  For a complete rebuild, you can spend in the upwards of 20K.  The engine and transmission can probably done nicely for around 3-4K.

The best advice I could give you is to make sure you start out with a fairly solid body with minimal rust.  Although the rust can be removed, it always has a way of inevitibly coming through the paint after 5 or so years.

If you have a solid body, you are good to go.  I did a 76 Bus, which was a royal disaster when I picked it up.  However, it was a lot of fun and have been enjoying it for years.
