Volkswagen: Steering play, steering gearbox, bump in the road

Question
Hello.
Lately, my '78 bus has been "wandering" on the road.  The steering when has a lot of play in it.  And also, when i hit a pot hole bump in the road at a  high speed (50-70 mph), the front of the bus jiggles rapidly left to right very quickly.  I don't know if this has to do with the front steering or the suspension.
Thanks for your expertise.

Answer
Jake,
This may be 1 or more of the following:
- The steering gearbox
- The steering dampner
- Tie rods

You can do some adjustment on the gearbox.  The dampner can be tested by removing, then pushing in and out; it should have resistance like a shock, in both directions.  You can check the tie rods for play by having someone turn the steering wheel back and forth while observing the movement of all the steering linkages from underneath.
Another problem could be the gearbox, or any other component, bolts being loose.
