Is the water pump tied in with the timing belt or is it a more simple fix?

It's run off an accessory belt.  More simple is relative.  Once you gain access to the pump, you're halfway there for changing the timing belt.  There are two ways to change the pump, either as a complete unit or just the pump face.  Make sure you get one with a metal impeller.
