Volkswagen: 1995 Jetta will not start, mass air flow sensors, air flow sensors

Question
My boyfriend's Jetta has been a pain to start recently. Today he needed to take his friend to work and couldn't get it to start. Normally if it's hot outside, he leaves the windows open for about 10 minutes and tries it again. It usually starts, but today it didn't. He tried it again later but it didn't start. He thinks it might be the ignition switch, but he's not sure. What is wrong? If it is the ignition switch, how much does it cost to have it repaired?

Answer
Hi Taylor... try this for me.  Put the key in the ignition and turn to the start position.  Jiggle the key in a bunch of different directions a bit and see if the odd things happen. (lights flicker, car starts, etc.)  Ignition switch is probable on this car.  The switch is not terribly priced...but installation can be about 2.5 hours labor.  (depends how much your local shop charges )  That said, the mass air flow sensors die often and  tune ups need to be regular.
let me know what you find.
