Volkswagen: 1998 Jetta Electrical, jetta gl, blower works

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1998 Jetta GL, the low beam head light don't work, the wipers don't work and the blower doesn't work. Replace the lamps for the head lights, still doesn't work. However, when you hold the dimmer switch on high beam, the lights work, the blower works and the wipers work. Check all the relays and they check out OK. Tried replacing the dimmer switch and it's the same problem. The tail lights and the maker lights all work and turn signal all work fine.

ANSWER: when you say "dimmer" switch, do you mean the "stalk" on the left side of the steering wheel for cruise control and high beam ? I ask because these cars are known for that "stalk" going out and the ignition switch dying.  Both of which could be your problem.
let me know,
thanks,

QUESTION: Hello Shad, thanks for the response. It is the stalk that I am referring to, however, I have replace it with three other ones I got from the junk yard. They were working on the cars I pull them from. I haven't tried replacing the ignition switch. But why would that have an impact on the wipers and blower?

Thanks looking forward to your response

Answer
If you have replaced the stalks, that's great.  So if we have eliminated that, the next step is the ignition switch.  Personally I don't just "swap" parts to see what works...but without a good factory manual with wiring diagrams for you to follow, here we are.  hehe  Actually, if you hold the key in your ignition switch at a "sweet" spot you will probably find that your wipers work and so does everything else.  You may have to jiggle the key back and forth to find the spot... but that is a good sign.  Remember, the ignition switch is what sends power back out to many items on your vehicle. That said, let me know if you find the "sweet" spot and I can probably walk you through removal of this switch.  WARNING, YOU will NOT change this switch without a drill, time and a really sound three jaw puller.  So if you don't have one... find a good VW shop or go to the dealer.

thanks again,
