Volkswagen: 79 karmann bug convertible, gilmore enterprises, classic vw

Ron - Two questions...I am a soon to be owner (hopefully) of a classic bug.  Have just found one that looks fabulous. '79 Karmann bug convertible.  Not concourse but in great condition.  Living in Florida, I don't think I could take having NO A/C.Is it possible to do an aftermarket installation of A/C?  I have seen that in the later models, it was available as an option.
Question # 2...  I can't locate any information on how to decode a classic VW VIN#.  Are these #'s matching cars as with the american cars?
Any assistance you can give is most appreciated.

There is an outfit in Florida that makes new A/C units for the 1979 Super Beetle convertible!

The name of the Company is Gilmore Enterprises and it is located in Clearwater.   The gentleman's name is Ed, and he is very helpful.

As far as the VIN goes, I will do some research and get back to you.
