Volkswagen: 1979 conv bug, valve clearance, fuel tank

Question
I am looking at a 1979 conv bug the gas gage stays on full can this be fixed? The owner said that it does not use oil but I noticed some under the car, should I be alarmed? When I drove it,if I slowed down are stopped it would go dead.

Answer
The fuel tank sender can easily be repaired for about 50.00.  That is typical for this car.

90% of VW's have little oil drips on the bottom of them.   Actually, they even sell Tee Shirts that say "VW's Always Leave Thier Mark".  So, if the puddle is no bigger than a dime/quarter after each ride, consider it normal.

The slow-down/stop issue is hard to diagnose without some further details, but I wouldn't worry about it being an expensive problem.

As long as it runs strong, does not overheat, and you have it completely tuned (ESPECIALLY THE VALVE CLEARANCE) prior to driving, you should be just fine.

Take Care,
