Volkswagen: Timing Belt, vw passat, timing belt

Question
My 1999 VW Passat's timing belt just broke & I was wondering if a car with 118,000 miles will have bad long term effects from this event.  If so, should I replace the part or just get a different car.

Answer
Colin, there is no way of telling until the cylinder head is removed.  IF the valves did not collide with the piston, it is probably worth repairing. (put on a water pump while the whole thing is apart).

If there is any damage to the valves or pistons, it is better to get a new engine or car.

Best of Luck,

Ron
