Volkswagen: 1972 beetle stalling!!, metal tubes, air hose

Question
Hello I e-mailed you to say that my beetle is stalling once the automatic choke comes off. It had stood for a month without use while its MOT (garage check that the car is road worthy and everything is in working order etc to obtain a certificate). Now that it has finally passed after some welding and a new door handle it keeps stalling when the revs drop ie when you brake and slow down. It didn't happen before and was wondering if it could be anything to do with a change in temp? as winter is now here and its much chillier although i don't understand why its fine while the choke is still on? can you help me? Also (sorry to be a nuisance) I have recently replaced the heat exchangers due to rust holes but they are still not working - the garage that fitted them said they couldn't connect them up due to an after market engine tray that was fitted which meant the air hose holes didn't line up with where they needed to connect onto the heat exchanger. I have now replaced this with the original and have put the air hose on but don't know if there should be any wires/levers that i need to connect in order that the heat comes out? Many Thanks for you help. Holly

Answer
Hi Holly,
At the top of the heat exchangers (closest to the front of the car) you will find two cables that come out of metal tubes.  These are the ones that need to be connected to the heat exchangers to keep you warm.

As to the stalling, have you tried turning the idle up a little bit?
