Volkswagen: Timing Belt, passat v6, timing belt

Question
I was told if the timing belt breaks on my 1999
Passat  v6 that it would ruin the entire engine.
They are wanting $600.00 to replace it. Does this
sound correct as far as the damage it can do and the price they have quoted me? All I wanted was an oil change :)

Answer
Hi Kim,

This is a correct statement.

The timing belt moves your valves up and down over the pistons.

If the belt breaks, it will inevitably leave a valve or two stuck in the open position.  At that point, the piston will blow through the top of the valve, because the valve isn't shut like it is supposed to be.  This actually shatters the valve and the piston.

This will inevitably ruin your entire engine.

It is good advice to replace the belt every 75-95K miles, based on your driving style.

As far as the price goes, that is very reasonable.   It may make sense to have them replace the water pump as a preventative measure.

That area of the engine is going to be completely disassembled to replace the timing belt, and is generally a good idea to save yourself any future issues!

Best of luck,

Ron
