is that true that beetle are prone to overheating
when its a long drive lets say 300klms.i just bought one with 1600 engine and i read in some beetle site that some owner are using mazda rx7 oil cooler to help engine cool .

If the engine is properly maintained and tuned to factory specifications, you will have no problems with overheating.

Hi Riz,

Please see the answer to Umer's question above.  That covers the primary reason for fires.

The only difference would be on the bus (Type II's):

Buses have the fuel/emissions hoses in the rear.  Part of the rubber hoses extend up into the body.   Check above the battery on both sides and make sure none of the hoses are cracked.  These hoses are known to leak (especially with a full tank).   

Second, the rubber fuel filler neck cracks over time and can leak around the engine.  To access this, remove the large circular disk by the battery. (it looks like a paint can lid)  It simply pops off.   You can reach up in there and see if there are any cracks or defects in it.
