Volkswagen: ignition,starter/selonoid connections, hook ups, test socket

Question
Hi, thanks in advance for any help!!  I have a 71 SB Conv I am
restoring and ran into a starting problem.  It would only click.
First I thought it was the selonoid/starter and put in a new unit.
Still clicked.  Used a screwdriver and jumped the terminals and it
started right up.  I followed several manuals directions for
checking everything and discovered it was just dirty terminal
connections on the wiring by using a test light.  It now starts
fine, but I think I have missed a wire connection.    There is a
solid red wire that feeds back from the ignition.  Under the back
seat, the wire goes out through a grommeted hole.  Right now I
have it going on the selonoid, but I think this is wrong because I
have the wire left (adjacent to starter/selonoid) that is enclosed
in black plastic with a 2nd wire) that leads into the engine
compartment (the other wire is red/white and eventually goes to
GEN.  Have I missed a connection??  I am unable to find a male
connector for that red wire to go to. Such a simple problem has
me in a quandry!

Answer
Hi Jim,

I looked at the wiring diagram for a 71, unfortunately, it is not in color.

It seems like you have the correct hook-ups right now, and I suspect the 'mystery wire' is one that went to the VW Test socket. (located in the engine compartment).

This was used years ago by VW to do rudimentary diagnostics.  (a primitive OBD)
