Volkswagen: Beetle engine problems, rubber boots, static timing

Question
Hi Ron,I have a 1972 Beetle,it starts up on full choke runs for about 30 seconds then cuts out.It will not start again unless I leave it for a couple of minutes then it does exactly the same as before.I've renewed the plugs points dizzy cap and leads, replaced the carb with a known working one and renewed the fuel pump and it's still the same,,Help!

Answer
Hi Rob,

Check these things:

1) That there are no restrictions in the fuel hose or clog in the fuel tank.

2) The intake manifold is fastened tightly to the heads.

3) Timing (static timing)

4) The little rubber boots that connect the intake manifold tubes. (make sure they are not loose or cracked)

5) Make sure the electric choke is hooked up.  The wire should go from the electric choke to the positive lead on the ignition coil.

Good Luck and let me know how you make out.

Ron
