Volkswagen: 1975 super beetle Convt., metal tops, accelerator pedal

Question
I have the chance to buy this vehical. Can you tell me what to look for? The owner uses it, the outside body looks in very good shape. have not be inside or under. is there a area of the body that I should look at more closely? I was told that these types of care are framless

Answer
Hi Chris,

1) Check the floor pans, especially under the battery.   Keep in mind to replace them is roughly $180.00 a side.

2) Make sure that the original fuel injection is still intact, it keeps the value.  1975 started the fuel injection for bugs.  The FI system is very reliable.

3) Check under the front accelerator pedal area for rust-through.  The frame member repair can run about $200.00.

4) Because convertibles have no metal tops which keep them from buckling in the middle, make sure the doors close perfectly straight.   This will ensure the car has no bending.

5) Underneath all convertibles are large metal re-enforcement bars (located next to the running boards).  These bars keep the car stable because it's a convertible.  Make sure that they are straight, and no rust.  To replace these, it is approximately $190.00 a side.  Also, if you are not sure how to find these bars,  look for the holes on the side where the jack goes.

6) While driving make sure that the transmission does not make any lound sounds while cruising, or the stick shift does not make a large rattling sound.  Keep in mind, a new transmission costs $450.00, if you install it yourself.

Other than that, you should be fine --- all the other repairs are minimal.

Thanks, and I hope all works out for you,

Ron
