Volkswagen: 1969 vwbug, screw holes, salvage yard

Question
i live in new york state and 2 license plates are required, however, since there is no place on my new '69 beautiful bug to put the front license my question is: IF I HAVE TO PUT ONE ON HOW SHOULD I DO IT OR IF SOMEHOW BECAUSE THAT YEAR HAD NO PLACE TO PUT IT, IS THERE SOME NY LAW TO GET AROUND PUTTING IT ON THE FRONT AT ALL?

Answer
Hi Nancy,

I live in NJ and feel your pain!  Unfortunately, you do need to put the license plate on the front!  If your 1969 is in beautiful shape, and you are pretty sure that you have the original bumper on the front, I wouldn't suggest drilling it if you don't have to.

Here are 3 thoughts:

1) If you MUST, find a license plate kit at a local auto store and drill two holes to hold the bracket on, than affix the plate.  (ouch, I know)

2) See if there are any screw-holes already on the bumper you can use.   If not, you may want to go to a salvage yard and find a used/inexpensive bumper that is already drilled and has a bracket fitted.

3) You can order an new 'knock off' bumper that looks exactly the same, but it is a thinner gauge of steel/chrome.  You would feel much better drilling into that one, as it is only $49.00, as compared to an original one which can cost around $250-$300.   This way, should you move, you have preserved your original bumper.

Here is the info for a knock-off bumper:

302-891 Beetle: 1968-73 Front Bumper, triple chrome plated
$49.00

Here is the URL I found it on:

Fortunately, they are easy to take on and off, so depending on the prestine condition of your beetle, you can weigh the options.

Good Luck, and let me know what you decide to do!
