Volkswagen: 1971 bus volkwagon, clutch cable, clutch pedal

Question
have a 1971 transporter. pulled in the driveway and somthing in the clutch snapped now stays down. Is this the cable and if so where is it located. I can't seem to find

Answer
Hi Rick,

Common problem.

1) You can obtain a new clutch cable at www.gowesty.com

Here is the information for it:

Clutch Cable (68-71)
Item 211-721-335E
Price $7.95
Fits: 68-71

2) To remove the cable, you must first start from the back.  Find the transmission, and on the top of it (drivers side, where it meets the engine) you will see the cable connected to a lever with a wing-nut.  That must be unscrewed.

3) Next, on the same side of the transmission is a curved tubed that the cable disappears into.  This is called a "Bowden Tube" and is held on with 2 13 MM screws.  Remove this as well.  Now you can pull out the cable from the rear, if it's indeed broken.

Now go to the front...

3) Underneath the front of the bus there is a pan (well, usually...sometimes they are already gone) that covers the underneath of the pedal mechanism.   Remove this pan, and you will see where the clutch pedal housing screws into the side of the frame with two 13 MM bolts.  Remove this, pull it out, and you will find a hook that the cable latches on to.  Unhook it, and again, if it's broken, pull the other half out.

4) Lube up the new cable, feed it through, and tighten everything up.  There should be no play in the pedal, it is adjustable by tightening the wing-nut on the transmission.

Let me know how you make out.

Enjoy your VW!
