Volkswagen: 1998 Jetta Remote, car battery, jetta

My niece recently purchased a 1998 Jetta, there was one remote included which didn't work.  I purchased a new unit from the dealer & they were nice enough to print out the instructions.
I followed them but was unable to progam the unit.
As I recall after turning the outside key counterclockwise the car beeped three times, then I pressed the unlock button on the remote, I think it beeped one time (but was supposed to beep 2)

Any suggestions?
Is it true that the car's computer is limited to programing a total of 4 remotes only?

Hi Brett,

The 1998 Jetta will only read 4 unique keys.

If you have less than that, try removing the battery again and folloing the instructions.  Also, you may want to disconnect the car battery to reset the system if you still have problems.
