Volkswagen: 69 bug where are things, rear defogger, air ventilation

my new old 69 bug...am freezing, can't see out rear plse hlp
what is the toggle switch under dashboard? turns on a green light on odometer but nothing else
what are the 2 knobs on dashboard under radio with arrows?
what are the 2 levers between the seats, up or down seem to do nothing
WHERE IS THE HEAT AND HOW DO I TURN IT ON
WHERE IS THE SWITCH FOR REAR WINDOW DEFROST?

Hi Nancy,

The rear defogger switch should be the toggle switch under the dashboard.  (to ensure that it is equipped with that feature, make sure that the rear window has the grid-lines across it).  If not, you do not have rear defrost.

The two knobs with arrows are for cool air ventilation.  Turning them one way will allow air to blow out the top of the dash towards the windshield, the other will turn it off.

The two levers next to the seats are the heat.   The one next to the passenger seat should be the temperature. Fully up is high temperature, down is off.   The lever next to the drivers side is down for front window defrost, and up for the footwell heating.

If still no heat, check the engine and make sure that the two hoses on either side of the motor (they come from the black upright 'dog house' and go down towards bottom of the motor) are intact.  That provides the air necessary for VW heat.

Second, check under the car, where the engine meets the transmission.  There is a box on either side called a 'heat exchanger'.  There should be a cable connected to each one of them.  When you pull that temperature lever up (by the passenger seat, it should pull the cables, and thus open the levers letting the heat into the car).  Make sure both are connected, and pull open, towards front of car when the heater lever is on full heat temp. setting. (as stated above)
