Volkswagen: 2000 Passat not a wagon VW, turn signals, hazard switch

Just recently I started to have trouble with the turn signals in my
car.  1 out of 4 times the turn signals will come on when I want
them to but the other times they do not work.  Often they will come
on for a second and then just stop, even if the wheel is not being
turned.  They do not blink on the dash or the actual turn signals.  I
tried to replace the turn signal fuse but that did not work.  I would
appreciate any other suggestions that you might have.

the common problem is the hazard light switch, as it has the indicator relay built in. these tend to play up from time to time. when the indicator does not work, if you hit the dash near the hazard switch, 90% of the time the indicator wil start to blink correctly. if so, replace the hazard switch as you can't hit the dash every time you want to turn.
