Volkswagen: VW Sharan, heavy rain, wiper motor

Wiper blades give up in heavy rain, leave them to rest & they will try again but soon pack in.

do they work slowly? as the pivots have a tendency to seize. if so take it to a small garage and ask them to remove the spindles and free them off (as volkswagon just fit a new wiper mechanism for silly money) if not, then it may need a new wiper motor.
