Volkswagen: VW Jetta 02 Brake Lights on all the time, brake light switch, vw jetta

My brake lights remain on at all times even when the car is turned off. this is not the indicator light this is the actual brake lights in the rear of the vehicle. the only way to turn them off is to disconnect the car battery. Its as if a signal is telling the lights that the brake is engaged at all times. Any ideas???

it sounds like the brake light switch has failed. they are fairly common although they normal stop working all together. the only other problem may be the lighting ecu depending on the cars wiring system ( some have ecu's to control them other are traditionally wired) the later is very rare, and generally only one light will stay on continuesly.
