Volkswagen: golf seat repair?, centre bit, seat base

Question
i'm not sure if this is in your field of expertise, but it looks like
you know a ton, so here goes:

i own a 1996 Golf (4-door GL), which i bought in 2000.  over the
past couple of years, the edges of the seat foam closest to the
doors (front seats only) has begun to slowly migrate down,
leaving the seat lopsided toward the door.  it's not quite to the
point of discomfort yet, but it's getting close.

i'd like to fix this myself.  it seems like a really trivial thing to
take to an upholsterer, and i'm not a complete moron -- just
very cautious (and very cheap ;-).  however, i'm stumped by the
wire that straps the cover in place at the bottom of the seat -- i
can't quite fit my hand underneath the cover as it is, but i also
don't want to force it off.

any ideas or suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated!
thanks much.

Answer
the seat base cover is held down by a steel cable over the seat base unit, you will need to0 remove the seat and lay it on it's back. then remove the plastic covers and then release the cover from it's clips. once the outter edge is loose, the centre bit is secured by steel rods to the base to give it shape. you will need to unhook these clips to remove the cover and refit it in reverse. ( i would take it to an upholsterer personally as the covers cost a fortune if it gets damaged. also it may need a new foam insert making or buying but they wil be able to sort it out)
