Volkswagen: 86 jetta, shaft seal, input shaft

Question
I just bought an 86 jetta with a 5 speed, it seems to be pretty good all around.  Yesterday I noticed a puddle of oil under the motor, it smells like gear oil and seemed to be dripping from the silver cover plate (I assume is the gearbox)
How much of a job is it to change that seal in there?

Answer
if it is the gearbox input shaft seal, then you need to remove the gearbox and replace the seal. it is a straight forward (but heavy) job. it will take an experienced mechanic using a ramp about 4 hours to do it. this is not a job i would advise doing on the floor. also, is it the seals around the drive shaft inner seals that are leaking?
