Volkswagen: Another Question., milege, alberto alberto

Question
Hello Ron,I just came across to something else. If I am considering this car (Golf),I know lot of milege has a lot to do with how you drive your car, but would there be too much diference in fuel economy between the 1.9lt engine and the 2.0lt engine, considering the hore power, and torque power as well. Some one else mantion to me that 2.0lt 115hp were less likely to break down, Is that true? Does it make much of diference?

Thanks
Alberto.

Answer
Alberto,

I have not heard of the 1.9 engine being any less reliable than the 2.0, if the vehicle has been driven and maintained by the owner.

The 2.0 packs a bit more punch, so , people are more inclined to "Get on the gas" and take off quickly.  It's good once in a while, but in the long run, your engine will soon be toast.   That is probably where that myth comes from.

Second, the 1.8 (I believe that was the only type) was recalled for bad coil insulators.  It really was a fault created by a supplier to VW.   It has been corrected, and the person who told you about the 1.9 being more likely to break down, could have been referring to the 1.8's with the coil problem.

My research has shown no concrete evidence of one engine being more reliable than another.  Again, I think it's the driver and proper maintainence that keeps it running.

A good example is my mother:  She thinks that when the little red "OIL" light goes on, it's time for an oil change.  As long as it runs, no worries.   Avoid my mother and those like her!

Either way you will be fine, the difference in fuel is more dependent on how you drive.  You are talking about pennies in fuel economy if you drive it properly.
