Volkswagen: 1984 Jetta Leak, water leaks, light beams

Question
Hi Ron,
I am the proud owner of an almost-perfect 1984 Jetta.  The only problem that I seem to be having is that every time that it rains (or I wash the car), water leaks from somewhere under the passenger-side dash, next to the air conditioner unit.  There is a little vent down there that seems to be the output for the leak, but I don't know enough about cars to find the place where the water comes in.  It has only been doing this for the last year or so.  I am wondering if there is a water runoff tube or something in the vent that is clogged with leaves.  When I run the fan unit (for the vent or heat/AC etc), it is obvious that there are a lot of leaves and twigs in there.  If you could instruct me how to clean that out also, that would be great.  Thanks a lot for your help.

Answer
Andrew,

Not too familiar with these vehicles, but I'll attempt to help.

I know that some Jetta's had water leaks near the front of the vehicle.  Unfortunately, I don't have the resources to get the specifics right now.

The leak is most likely coming from the cooling lines going into the evaporator through the firewall.   VW uses a black type of pliable putty that goes around the pipes into the car.

Check around those pipes first, and see if you can spot any areas where it may have fallen or cracked off.

One Hint is to put the car in a garage, get a buddy to help you.  Get a droplight and turn off the garage light.  Have your buddy shine the light on the firewall from the inside of the engine while you look under the dash by the air conditioner.

Can you see any light beams?  If not, reverse the drop light and check. (careful not to burn any wires)  Finally, close the hood and see if you can see light through any areas near the hood seal/Vent.

Good Luck -- Keep me posted.
