Questionjohn, thank you for providing this service. Im looking at
purchasing a 1997 passat wagon vr6 2.8l. I know vw's reputation
for the late 90's-00's has not been good. I have owned early 90's
jettas and been very happy. Are there any major
problems,recalls or issues that you know of with this particular
model? The dealer that is selling it just replaced the heating core
and other parts because it was faulty and melted area around it.
Also do you know if this model comes in a 4motion model. The
dealer said it was, but I can find no info this model. Thanks and I

AnswerI have seen vw passat v6 4motion estates, these are rare and hard to find. as for there general reliability, the multi-link front suspension is prone to worn ball joints and bushes. they can prove to be expensive to replace depending on where the job is done. otherwise the rear differential seals tend to weap oil a little, but this is not a major problem. a good roadtest should show any suspenion wear, in the form of knocks and creaks on uneven ground. the engine and drive train are strong and reliable, they have been used for a good number of years on audi quattro's. i hope this answers your queries. if you need further info please ask. thankyou. john dempsey.
