Cannot engage reverse -when lock is lifted ,will only go into forward gear??

Firstly i would check the shift cables there should be two and sometimes they go bad .have someone look under the hood while you shift to see what is happening .Other wise the problem could be internal .This is not that common unless it has high mileage ...
