Volvo: heating/cooling, electronic climate control, relay switch

Question
99 s70 160000mi   no AC, weak defrost, engine cooling fan not working. Lights on AC and recirc buttons not lighting up. I've replaced the engine cooling fan relay switch. Clutch not engaging on AC. Its been recharged and the compression is good. I don't really care about the AC since I live in New Hampshire, but the defrost is a good thing to have about 9 months out of the year. Is the Engine fan that big a deal?

Answer
Steve,
Without the engine cooling fan you take the chance of overheating the engine. That can cause major problems. Defrost generally also turns on the A/C compressor, however the blower for the heater should push heater air to the windshield. There might be some codes in the system to read that will lead to a failed area. No lights at all on the climate unit, check the fuses. If the system is the ECC electronic climate control one there is way with the scan tool to adjust or reprogram the vents positions.
