Volvo: PCV maintenance, combustion residue, pcv system

Question
Ray, I was in the process of changing my t-belt on a 2001, S40 turbo when I noticed combustion residue on the inside of the upper t-belt cover, opposite the exhaust cam pulley. Besides the leaky cam seal, I assume that the PCV system needs maintenance. I'm wondering how this job (pulling the intake and replacing the box and hoses) compares to the t-belt replacement in terms of complexity? thanks Ray.

Answer
Bruce,
The replacement of the cam seal will be the tougher job and more expensive simply because of the special tools needed to hold the cam shafts as you remove the pulleys. To replace the breather box is simply a lot of busy work, that requires patients and time. Be sure to clean out the area where the box attaches to the engine. It sometimes gets plugged.
