Volvo: volvo v70, volvo v70, v70 awd

Question
I have a 1998 v70 awd wagon w 180k. Sometimes when I start it I can't move the shifter, I can use the shiftlock overide and it goes into gear, but then the directionals do not work.
This is a little troubling, is it the sign of something awful, is there a remedy?
Thanks

Answer
Jamie,
If you wiggle the ignition key just a bit when this happens do things start to work? Sometimes the switch fails and the power from the ignition does not flow to things like the shiftlock and turn signals, heater fan radio, etc. If not the ignition then is there power at the shift lock micro switch? That switch has a high failure rate. The turn signals could be a bad flasher assembly, part of the 4 way flashers.
