Audio Systems: Subwoofers, vw passat, private question

Question
For Christmas, I installed a Solo Baric 12" in prebuilt box from Circuit City, in the trunk of a 2003 VW Passat. This is my wife's car and it turned out to be WAY more bass than she wanted or needed. I did replace the door speakers and amped them with a new HU and changer. I wanted to replace the 12 with 4 8"s in sealed boxes, for more trunk space. I just wonder how this will compare. Would I be better off with 1 or 2 10's, than 4 8's? I have seen 64 6.5's out SPL 4 15's, so I'm a little confused about the change over as far as what sounds better than what. I Could even go back with a round 12 if it were a sub that could handle a small enclosure.

Answer
Bill,
If you want a concise and full answer (and it seems like you do), please re-submit this question and use the Private Question option as indicated in my BIO.

In a nutshell, I need the specific model number of that Kicker in order to determine feasible resolves using it in a smaller enclosure. It sounds like you should be using a sealed one if you are after accuracy and not SPL. Pre-fab boxes rarely do the job of accuracy and are geared towards 'boom'.

On the other end, you should be able to get accurate bass in that Jetta out of a well loaded, single 8" sub.

I will add that you can and should tune the system to its' weakest link. So, simply turn down the sub amp to match the rest of the system until we can get your space situation, defined, anylised and dealt with.

Sincerely,
Jerry Mael
