Volvo: shift lock release?, electrical portion, switch car

Question
Key will not turn in the ignition switch.  Car is parked in level driveway, wheels are not turned to either side nor are they up against a curb.  Steering wheel is locked but can be moved the slight amount necessary to make sure that's not what's keeping the key from turning.  A/T can be taken out of PARK and moved freely through all gears.  Car will roll in Neutral.  Any advice?

Answer
Jim,
There has been a large number of defective ignition locks in the S70's, some S80's. If that is your car look into ordering a keyed ignition lock. When you install it be sure that the cable from the lock to the shifter is secure and adjusted so the key will turn all the way to the off position and allow the key to be removed.
You can remove the lock on the car where it is, but that will take the drilling of the bolts that hold the lock assembly to the column. Then take the electrical portion of the switch off and use a  screwdriver to turn it and start the car.
Bolts that hold the lock are break off bolts to help make it difficult to remove the lock assemble and steal the vehicle. There're the one you drill and use an easy out to remove.
