Volvo: 1999 Volvo S 80 Turbo, mass air flow sensor, mass air flow

Question
I bought this car with 51k, 3 weeks ago. It had been dealer maintained up until 40k according to the owners manual. It has 53K on it now and the dealer stated it would be 5200.00 to fix the transmission. I was going up a hill and the motor revved and it was like I shifted from neutral to drive and it bumped hard. I went to the auto parts store and purchased a transmission filter as the parts guy thought it might help. After installing, I took it for a drive and when going around a corner without letting off the gas, it did it again. It was like stepping on the gas and shifting from neutral to drive. I went back to the auto parts and they put it on the check engine light tester and it came back with a code for "manufacturer fuel/air" something. It was suggested that I change the fuel filter which I did. Took it for a ride again and going around a corner, was like shifting from neutral to drive. I then used the manual shift and the front tires were hopping as the trans would catch then let off and catch again. I took it to the dealer and he said that the shop manager took it for a ride after it was warm and it was slipping out of gear. The trans would need to be replaced for 5200.00 OUCH considering I paid 6900 for the car. I was also told the mass air flow sensor wasnt at its peak and it was almost 500.00. Any suggestions on the transmission issue? Chris

Answer
Chris,
Nothing to do just get the trans. Those transmissions go bad all the time and have many problems. Good chance the trans was starting to go bad a while back. I have not heard of anyone that can rebuild those units. So doing a new Volvo unit is the best bet.
