Volvo: 1980 240 - Controller or Distributor?, pickup coil, compression test

Question
Car ran when cold, shut down when warm, now it does not start at all. I get no spark so I put a 12v light across the coil. The light is on when I crank it but does not flicker.  Is it a bad controller or a bad pickup coil inside my distributor (electronic ignition) I read 1200 ohms across leads at the distributor and also the incoming plug to the controller (no ground in between). So should I replace my controller or the distributor?  ps. I did do a compression test without disconnecting the primary side of the coil... I heard somewhere that that was bad.  Thanks, Rich

Answer
Richard,
I have seen both the dist and the ign box cause that problem. I do not have a fault trracing for that old of car. At this point the best thing to do is try a known good part. Now I know that is not going to be easy. Try getting on line and searching for used Volvo parts. It would help if you got the Bosch numbers off the parts and used those to help locate the parts.
