Volvo: starting, fuel pressure regulator, burning rubber

Question
When i try to start my s40 it turns over for about 8 seconds and finally kicks the engine on, but if i dont give it a lot of gas it sputters and cuts off. Also, sometimes during acceleration and idling i see smoke and smell burning rubber. What do you think these things could be?

Answer
Greg,
What you need is to have someone look at the car when this is happening. There have been some problems with the fuel pressure regulator. That will give you a long crank time. The burning smell is something that needs tracing to the cause. Could the drive belt be rubbing on something? One of the idler pullys locking up and dragging the belt over it? Something caught on the exhaust system and burning?
